Textbook in PDF format This book features a compilation of applicable and insightful engineering notes extracted from the author's multi-decade career in industry and academia. The book includes a plethora of modern engineering tools, including simulators and platforms like MatLAB and LabVIEWTM that have been utilized to support the topics. The book is organized into four parts: Riddles, Simulations, Projects, and Math. The Riddles include puzzling issues encountered in the basic concepts and their various solutions. The Simulations section presents examples of challenging simulations, such as an ECG telemetry system, a software timer IC, and a random number generator. The section also addresses the weak points of simulators that must be considered. The Projects part comprises hardware and software projects from real life, including a DTMF pager and a barcode reader. The Math part aims to underline the importance of mathematics in engineering. For example, complex numbers are employed to show how to generate rotating magnetic fields and explain the backward-rotating wheels of carts in movies. A project exploiting vector algebra calculates the distance and heading between two points on the earth. The part is concluded with a Sudoku generator. This toolbox of solutions is intended for researchers, academics, students and professionals in electrical engineering. I organized the book into parts containing chapters that fall in the same category. It has been difficult to arrange the notes into chapters; they are not about a specific subject: some are about electronics, some about math, some about programming, some about reverse engineering, some about signal processing, and some are on work using modern tools like MatLAB or LabVIEW. There are mind-boggling topics among them that have intrigued me for years. I have found answers to some, but some still keep challenging me. The chapters are not prerequisites to each other; hence, they can be read independently. The only prerequisite is that the reader has already taken courses in circuit theory, electronics, electromagnetic theory, signals and systems, computer programming, calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. Math is essential. It inspires where and when intuition ceases. Readers will notice that I sometimes delve into mathematical details to make my point. Many topics in science and engineering have evolved and developed in light of mathematics. The mathematical discussions are there to persuade the reader and present the subject more scientifically. These mathematical developments support the ideas besides circuits or simulations but may also be skipped. I recommend patience and taking your time to go through them. A general computer programming notion is necessary. Exposure to any computer programming is fine. Throughout the book, I made profuse use of LabVIEW and occasionally used MatLAB, SPICE code, or assembly programming. I believe some or all of these platforms are introduced to undergraduate students. I advise that you try the demos or the programs on these platforms. Unfortunately, they cost a lot of money. But the good news is that they also offer trial versions with limited capabilities or time. Another good thing is that they have clones, like OCTAVE and SCILAB for MatLAB and LTspice for paid SPICE programs. The reading will be more exciting with these platforms. As far as I know, LabVIEW has no clone. It is an excellent platform that facilitates ideas’ efficient and rapid transformation into reality. So download a trial version if you don’t have it. Every circuit and program included in this book has been tested on my bench or computer. This book is not for the hobbyist, nor is it for the instructor teaching a specific subject. It’s for the curious, those who love to uncover something from the past or discover an enigmatic fact hidden from attention. The practical nature of the content is sure to appeal to those who prefer hands-on learning.
