Textbook in PDF format This book introduces the basic digital components and devices, often with respect to historical events which led to these concepts, before combining them to make complete digital systems. The historical aspect is important in than many older devices were purely mechanical. This helps in understanding the basic concepts before embarking on analysis and application of modern semiconductor devices. The book covers all aspects of digital technology needed by first/second year university students. Basic devices and their combination from simple circuits to complete ALUs. Sequential concatenation of devices leads to counters, timers, registers and memory. Parallel to these subject, all mathematical aspects of Boolean algebra are covered. The book culminates in a fusion of the three main subjects resulting in the design of a basic CPU and the implementation of assembly language code. Throughout the book, reference is made to original historical devices and designs which have led (or in many cases, not) to the development of modern digital and computing systems. Although the details of analogue electronics are often first taught, or at least parallel to digital electronics, the introductory parts should suffice for a basic understanding of the devices used in digital circuitry. As a prerequisite, only basic mathematics, engineering knowledge and fundamental electrical theory (such as Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws) are required. The text introduces fundamental digital components and devices, often with respect to historical events which led to their conception, before combining them to design complete digital systems. The historical aspect is important in that many older devices were purely mechanical and demonstratively simple to comprehend. This helps students to understand basic concepts before embarking on analysis and application of the more covert modern semiconductor devices. References are provided, not only for information sources directly relevant to the text, but also to more advanced texts. This is intended to serve as a bridge between this basic introductory course for first semester (first year) undergraduates and later courses. General programming languages are mentioned and occasional references to C are made, but without great detail as computer programming is usually part of a parallel information technology course. Preface Introduction to Digital Electronics Combinational Logic Sequential Logic Binary Mathematics The Basic Computer Software Applications A Short History of Computers
