As a matter of fact, the technological advancements coupled with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning have opened an era of humanoid and other robotic services in various fields of applications. The fields of space exploration, medical surgeries, military and defence are among a few dominated by the electronics industry besides the day-to-day life of any human individual. This technological evolution has resulted in an increase in the average number of gadgets per person. The computational time for highly complex tasks has been reduced and the results are more accurate because no human error is involved. All the electronic devices involve procuring and processing of raw materials, fabrication and use. The concern arises when the products reach their end-of-life cycle. When electronic equipment/devices are no longer useful, they are either discarded or some parts are reused. If these electronic devices are discarded in the form of garbage, they pose serious risks to the environment because of some toxic elements which may be present. The question arises, “What are we leaving for the future?” “What will our future generations see?” Sustainable electronics refers to the design, production and disposal of electronic devices in an environmentally responsible manner. The approach aims to minimize the negative impacts on the environment associated with the entire life cycle of electronic products, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to use and eventual disposal or recycling. To reduce the menace of electronic waster (e-waste) and develop a sustainable electronics industry requires the design and implementation of sustainable strategies through all stages of the product life cycle. The formulation of sustainable policies should commence during the design phase, encompassing measures to assess the environmental consequences, opt for biodegradable or abundant materials as substitutes for scarce metals or dangerous chemicals, or employ sophisticated manufacturing techniques to produce smaller and shape-adjustable components that are suitable for reuse and recycling. The sustainable principles should further be adopted in the manufacture, use and disposal of electronic devices. The ideas of circular electronics, consisting of nine core concepts (Rethink, Redesign, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Remanufacture, Refurbish and Recover), have been proposed to address the pressing need for sustainable solutions that minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. These principles serve as a guiding framework for the transformation of electronics design, production and consumption, therefore fostering sustainability across all phases of their lifespan.
