Initially calling themselves The 5 Torquays, they played standard amateur rock material (cover versions of famous rock 'n' roll and beat songs, and original compositions in the same style), but over time they changed their name and image and began to make much more radical and original music - today their recordings are often cited as among the earliest examples of proto-punk. After completing their military service, they settled in Hamburg and soon began playing regular gigs at clubs like the Star Club and Top Ten (where The Beatles had started their career a few years earlier) as The Monks; At the instigation of their friends Walter Niemann, a student at the Essen School of Fine Arts, and Karl Remy, who was studying design at the university, they brought their appearance into line with their new name - they shaved their heads like monks, dressed in black, and put nooses around their necks. The musical material they performed was as unconventional as their appearance - the "Monks" created deliberately "primitive", minimalist compositions in which the leading place was occupied not by melody, but by rhythm; lead guitarist Gary Burger experimented with feedback, and a completely unique sound was given to the music by Dave Day's homemade banjo and Larry Clark's organ passages. The audience's reaction to their performances was mixed; there were unpleasant incidents - for example, once someone from the audience almost strangled Gary Burger "for blasphemy". Nevertheless, for some time the musicians managed to attract the attention of critics and even recorded an album called "Black Monk Time"; soon, however, the group ceased to exist, and the musical legacy of The Monks was forgotten for a long time. They were rediscovered only in the 80s-90s; now critics compared them to The Velvet Underground and The Fugs, the famous musician and author of books and articles on rock music Julian Cope called "Black Monk Time" "a forgotten masterpiece" ("the lost classic") and declared that no one before them had recorded such crazy things ("no-one ever came up with a whole album of such dementia"). Among the fans of the group were John Spencer (Pussy Galore, John Spenser Blues Explosion), Mark E. Smith (The Fall), who recorded several covers of their songs, Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Jack White from the White Stripes. In 2006, a tribute album to The Monks, Silver Monk Time, was released, which became the soundtrack to a documentary about the Monks called Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback; the recording featured Faust, The Raincoats, Mouse on Mars, The Gossip, Silver Apples, John Spencer, Alan Vega from Suicide, and, in addition, Gary Burger himself, who a few years earlier had given several concerts with the reunited The Monks and recorded a live album with them
