The action of River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next begins after the events presented in the original. After the Battle of Red Cliffs, the war fought by three hostile countries into which China was divided (hence the name of this period - the Age of the Three Kingdoms) is in full swing. Kunio, as Guan Yu, is still in the middle of the action and takes part in subsequent historical battles, until the culmination of the entire era, the Battle of Wuzhang Plain. As was the case in the previous entry under this banner, in addition to Kunio, other characters known from the series appear in the game, often in surprising roles. The story itself is full of humor, treating history with a pinch of salt. In River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next, we watch events from the side. During the game, we control the selected character and travel through various stages, fighting dynamic duels with opponents. On the battlefield, we primarily use melee weapons, but our capabilities do not end there. We can also, among other things, get on a motorcycle known as Red Hare and run it over enemies, improving it and modifying its appearance as we progress. In addition, there are special attacks and tactics waiting to be tested, the skillful use of which can change the fate of many battles. Among the latter, the most important is the ability to summon friendly generals who can appear in the arenas as our reinforcements. River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next can be played alone or in cooperative multiplayer, online or on a shared screen.
