Textbook in PDF format A short course of quantum mechanics. In the last forty years man has made enormous strides in his understanding of matter and its behavior. In a large measure this has been due to the advent of quantum mechanics. The author believes that for this reason the education of a modern scientist or engineer is incomplete until he has come to know at least the main lines by which this progress is being made. This need not mean that everyone should be able to make his own theoretical calculations, but only that he should be able to appreciate and perhaps adopt the main ideas and tools of this extremely successful theory called quantum or wave mechanics. He should no longer be satisfied with the inept classical explanations. The fundamental purpose of this book is to sketch for undergraduate students the basic ideas of quantum theory. It encourages the serious student to then proceed to one of the numerous excellent texts which present a full treatment of the mathematical methods
