LLMs have the ability to take in and process vast quantities of data at extremely high speeds, and, critically, without that data being curated or “structured.” Which is to say that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Bing Copilot, and all the others can learn from natural human language without human supervision or prior processing of the training data. If AI systems can learn from unstructured data at high speed, then we have removed two of the most important bottlenecks to machine learning: the need for humans to do the painstaking and time-consuming work of setting up and maintaining structured data sets and the time it takes to process and learn from data. Further, as foundation models, LLMs can be used to carry out a variety of different tasks, none of which were pretrained by the developers of the model. For example, a single LLM can generate posts for social media, write code, solve math problems, create images based on text inputs, and create professional presentations in PowerPoint. In just the few years since the release of the first commercially available LLMs, this broad capability has already become so “normal” that it is easy to miss just how remarkable it is.
