Textbook in PDF format Python Experiments in Physics and Astronomy acts as a resource for science and engineering students or faculty who would like to see how a diverse selection of topics can be analyzed and simulated using Python programs. The book also provides Python solutions that can be learned from and modified as needed. The book is mainly aimed at undergraduates, but since many science students and faculty have limited exposure to scientific programming, having a collection of examples that address curve-fitting, Fast Fourier Transforms, image photometry and image alignment, and many others could be very helpful not just for learning from, but also to support classroom projects and demonstrations. The code examples were written in Python, and use popular supporting libraries such as Matplotlib, Pandas, Numpy, Math, Itertools, and Scikit. As presented, they can be run from an IDE such as Spyder, but any IDE should work. There is no reason they couldn’t be saved as standalone applications, but this was not done here to avoid the headaches of saving code in a robust form that would run on different operating systems and also because the examples generally consist of a Python class developed for a particular task, and a small test application that uses the class but with hardwired parameters like filenames and number of input lines to read into the test code. Some mechanisms, such as a configuration file or command line argument reading capability, would need to be added.
