Textbook in PDF format Infrared science and technology is far from being a new field of endeavour, indeed it has a venerable history stretching back almost to the middle of the last century. What is new is the integration of the infrared into the general area of electromagnetic physics and engineering and the deployment of infrared devices into a bewildering and rapidly increasing number of technical areas. As some token of this, one could say with fair accuracy that nearly all the significant work in the field has been done in the last twenty years or so and that most of the books devoted to the art, written more than ten years or so ago, are quite out of date. This state of affairs is true, of course, of technology as a whole and some areas, such as semi-conductor device fabrication, have had even shorter periods before obsolescence set in, but the rate of change in infrared technology is faster than most
